Apple AirTag Review: Why I Keep One on My Keys
Real-world reliability, technical limits, and the five questions to answer before buying
My everyday experience with Apple AirTag on my keys: what works, where tracking falls short, and what iPhone users should know before buying.
Quick Summary
What to know first
AirTag saves me time finding misplaced keys through Find My and its built-in speaker. For iPhone users, it is a useful everyday companion, but it is not a live GPS tracker or a replacement for a security system.

An Apple AirTag is a small Bluetooth tracker that helps you find belongings through Apple’s Find My app. Mine lives on my keys and saves me searching for them on busy mornings. It is an item finder, not a live GPS tracker.
My photographs and the keys-under-the-car-seat story below come from everyday use. The separate second-generation AirTag section covers Apple’s published 2026 specifications, not a hands-on comparison between generations.
Quick Verdict
Best for: iPhone users who regularly misplace keys, bags, luggage, or shared household items.
Skip it if: You use Android as your primary phone, need continuous GPS updates, or need a dedicated security or personal-safety tracker.
My Experience: Real-World Reliability for a Busy Parent
As a busy dad living in Madrid with a three-year-old, life can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. Every now and then, I used to lose my keys in the flat - not forever, but long enough to forget where on earth I had left them.
Since getting the AirTag, that particular headache is ancient history. Opening Find My and making the tag beep helps me find my keys without searching every room.
One incident showed me why the speaker matters just as much as the map. My keys slipped from my pocket inside the car and slid beneath the front seat, deep into a dark space under the rails. I knew they were nearby, but I still could not see them. Making the AirTag beep gave me a sound to follow, and that was how I finally found them.
That is what I appreciate about it. It does not need to do anything spectacular; it just makes an annoying little part of the day easier.

How an AirTag Actually Finds Your Property
Nearby: You can make the AirTag play a sound. On supported devices, Ultra Wideband also enables Precision Finding, which shows distance and direction to help you reach it.
Farther away: Another device in the Find My network must pass near your AirTag and privately relay its approximate location. Without nearby participating devices, updates stop. There is no subscription or cellular connection.

What Changed With the Second-Generation AirTag?
Apple reports up to 50% greater Precision Finding range and a 50% louder speaker for the 2026 AirTag. These are Apple’s figures, not my measurements. If your existing tag still does the job, I would not rush to replace it.
The second generation requires iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 or later. Precision Finding has additional hardware requirements.
Second-generation specifications and device compatibility
Expanded Precision Finding requires iPhone Air or iPhone 15 or later, excluding iPhone 16e and iPhone 17e. On Apple Watch, it requires Series 9 or later, or Ultra 2 or later, with watchOS 26.2.1 or later. Availability varies by region; check Apple’s current requirements for your device.

Battery, Water Resistance, and Daily Wear
The CR2032 battery is user-replaceable, with Apple rating normal use beyond one year. Actual life varies, and your phone warns you when it needs replacing.
IP67 does not mean permanently waterproof: resistance can decline with wear. Dry the tag after significant moisture and check its holder when replacing the battery.
My key-ring AirTag also shows scratches on its polished rear. That is cosmetic, and something I can live with on an item that travels with my keys.
Before You Buy
The Bottom Line
Would I recommend an AirTag, and would I buy one again? For my everyday life with an iPhone, the answer is a clear yes. It is one of those small things you appreciate most when you need it: less time hunting for keys, less frustration, and one less thing to worry about on a busy morning. Nothing flashy, just genuinely useful. For me, that is more than enough reason to keep one close.

FAQ
Common questions
Can you use an AirTag to track a stolen car or bicycle?
An AirTag may report a stolen item's location when it passes devices in the Find My network, but it is not an anti-theft tracker. It has no native GPS or cellular connection, location updates are not continuous, and unwanted-tracking protections may alert the person carrying it. Use it as a possible recovery aid, not as the vehicle's primary security system.
Does AirTag work with Android phones?
Not as an owner-controlled tracker. You need a compatible iPhone or iPad and an Apple Account to register and manage an AirTag. Android devices can receive cross-platform unwanted-tracker alerts, scan for separated trackers, and read Lost Mode contact details through NFC.
Can someone use an AirTag to stalk you?
AirTag includes rotating identifiers, cross-platform unwanted-tracker alerts, audible warnings, and instructions for disabling an unknown tag. These safeguards make covert misuse harder, but they do not make abuse impossible. Anyone receiving an alert should follow the safety guidance shown by their phone and contact local authorities if they feel at risk.
Should you use an AirTag for pets or children?
AirTag is designed to locate personal items, not to provide live safety tracking. It lacks GPS and cellular connectivity, so location updates depend on nearby Find My devices. A purpose-built GPS tracker is the more appropriate choice when continuous location data matters.
How reliable is long-range AirTag tracking?
Reliability depends on nearby Find My network devices. Updates can be fast in airports, cities, stations, and other busy locations, but they may stop entirely in forests, rural roads, or low-traffic areas. The map can only show the last location reported by a participating device.
